Fleming's Frustration Amid Improved Batting Performance

Mullanpur: Head coach Stephen Fleming expressed his disappointment after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fell short in their fourth consecutive IPL match, despite a stronger showing from the top order. CSK aimed to chase down a target of 220 set by Punjab Kings but ultimately lost by 18 runs on Tuesday.

Fleming described the season as 'frustrating' during his post-match comments, noting that while both teams struggled with catching, CSK's performance was particularly concerning. 'If you want to pick up 20 runs, it’s probably that and the drop catches,' he remarked.

So far this season, CSK has dropped 11 catches across five matches, with three occurring in the recent game against Punjab Kings.

On a positive note, Fleming highlighted the improved batting performance, particularly from openers Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, who contributed 69 runs together. Conway later added 89 runs alongside Shivam Dube, who scored 42.

'We batted a bit better and got some substance from the top order, which has been lacking,' Fleming stated. However, he acknowledged that maintaining a good run rate in the middle overs was a challenge, leaving too much to do at the end.

Fleming praised Punjab Kings' Priyansh Arya for his impressive 103 runs off 42 balls, despite the team's regular wickets falling. 'He played very well right from the first ball,' Fleming noted, emphasizing the need for CSK to bowl straighter to create pressure.

Punjab Kings' Shashank Singh, who scored 52 runs off 36 balls, emphasized the importance of state-level T20 competitions in identifying talent like Arya. 'These leagues provide opportunities to play under pressure and reveal a player's character,' Singh added.
